To use literature as a way to help children at school to regain their speech is the aim of the project-book Kimün: learning Mapudungun through poetry and stories.

This initiative was led by Maria Lara Millapán, Ph.D. in Teaching Language and Literature and a research associate of ICIIS.

Kimün was motivated by the need to create educational books for children. with this idea, a proposal was made to create a book that could be used in the school context, to teach mapudungun with texts that are both functional and adapted to the cognitive level of children and that would facilitate the learning of this language. The result was a text containing poems, short stories, didactic units and practical activities in it.

It is a compilation of four poets; Maria Lara Millapán, Graciela Huinao, Faumelisa Manquepillan and Erwin Quintupil. The selection of the books was made in accordance with the cognitive level of children. Once the books are published, they will be delivered to schools attached to the Intercultural Education Program –PEIB, in Spanish- of the Ministry of Education; to the traditional Mapuche educators and to the teachers. This, in view of the need of a basic command of mapugundun to guide the activities proposed in the text.
